What motivates a grocery store manager to have sales, introduce new products and services and incessantly search for other ways to please us and make us loyal customers? The easy answer is that the manager seeks greater profits, but profits cannot be simply decreed because he has no power to force us to shop at his store. He must lure us into his store pleasing us more than our next best alternative - his competitor down the street. The life of the manager and his employees, would be much easier if they could get legislators to write "level playing field" laws to "protect consumers" against cutthroat competition. A level playing field law might mandate that all grocers charge the same prices, sell the same items, and provide identical customer services. That way competition would be reduced. Right now your grocer and his employees know that if he charges high prices and provides poor quality service, you will take your business elsewhere. That would result in less business, lower profits and possibly bankruptcy. But if the manager and his employees could persuade lawmakers to enact a level playing field law, it would be a different story. The identical principle applies to workers. Some people think labor unions, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and minimum wage laws protect the worker. Labor unions, OSHA regulations and minimum wages laws do protect the jobs and income of some workers but at the expense of other workers' jobs and income. Labor unions and many labor laws are little more than a collusion against other workers. Having the chance to meet to other families from other cultures, the author himself found out that the entire process of maintaining health from his side of the family may be a little bit different from that of the process to which other cultures view the said need to protect one’s health. For one, the implicative manner by which the other family from the west naturally brings about the welcomed possibility of accepting new age medicine without any doubt. Likely, that family was particularly raised in a society of continuous change and development. Their intense belief that change is for the better makes them well acquainted with the different developments in medicine that brings about the possibility of dealing with health issues in a much convenient and faster way which they think is most effective not only for their health needs but also for the lifestyle that they are living. Meanwhile, another family attests to the use of rituals for the sake of saving a family from any health phenomenon that may arise in the human community that they are living in. Knowing how these people feel about their connection to their culture certainly makes it easier for the author of this paper to see through the situation and be able to decipher the health cases he is supposed to handle later on and still be able to find the most effective procedure there is to manage giving them the health care assistance they need without completely bypassing their cultural traditions just so to be able to save the lives of people in an ethical yet strategic way. It is through this process that the author believes that he would be able to successfully applied what he has learned within the four walls of the classrooms and laboratories along with the things that he learned and would be continuously learning from actual medical practice to meet the needs of the people who are culturally loyal to their traditions when it comes to health maintenance needs. True, some of these cultural or traditional procedures help well in the idea of keeping a good grip on keeping one’s health protected. In fact, it could not be denied that there are those medical experts who retrying the avenue of alternative medicine as suggested through traditional procedures of healing, however, for certain terminal health cases, there must be a careful balance on the given attention towards health safety and traditional loyalty to the ways that one or a family has been particularly accustomed to. Having read Ernest Hemingway’s â€Å"Hills Like White Elephants† several times, it seems to be a story that doesn’t make much sense. The two main characters, the American man and his female companion referred to as â€Å"girl†, are having a conversation that supports this theory. Their conversation turns into a short, familiar argument, but one that isn’t clear, even having read it several times. In the introduction preceding the short story, it states that â€Å"Hemingway has a concise way of developing a plot through dialogue and once explained how he achieved an intense compression by comparing his method to the principle of the iceberg: There is seven-eights of it under water for every part that shows. Anything you know you can eliminate and it only strengthens your iceberg. It is the part that doesn’t show. If a writer omits something because he does not know it then there is a hole in the story† (pg. 233). What this tells the reader is that Hemingway explained many things through the use of metaphors, leaving only the unknown. The question the reader must then ask is what is the metaphor in â€Å"Hills Like White Elephants† and what does it represent? While waiting for a train at a junction somewhere in Spain, the dialogue between the American man and the girl over a few drinks seems simplistic at first but the sarcasm on behalf of the girl surfaces the tensions that exist between the two characters. Her sarcasm and their argument begin when she says, â€Å"Everything tastes of licorice. Especially all the things you’ve waited so long for, like absinthe† (pg. 234). Instead of looking at the man accompanying her, the girl consistently admires the hills, almost as if she is envious of them. The man changes the tone of their conversation when he says â€Å"It’s really an awfully simple operation, Jig, it’s not really an operation at all† (pg. 235). The girl had no response. Instead she had feelings of guilt...
